Making the Dentist Less Scary
Custom Illustration for Smile Arc
In 2022, I was commissioned by Australian children's dental practice Smile Arc to create a large-scale illustration designed to transform the dental experience for young patients.
For many children, a visit to the dentist can be an intimidating experience. The brief was to create an artwork that would help ease anxiety, spark curiosity and turn an unfamiliar environment into one that felt playful and welcoming.
The Challenge
Children's healthcare environments require a careful balance between functionality and emotional comfort.
The illustration needed to:
- Create a positive distraction for children while they sat in the dental chair.
- Reduce feelings of anxiety and nervousness.
- Encourage imagination and conversation.
- Introduce humour and personality into the clinical environment.
- Appeal to both children and parents.
Rather than treating the artwork as decoration, the goal was to make it an active part of the patient experience.
The Creative Approach
I approached the project through the lens of humour and nostalgia, creating an illustration that comedically celebrates the world of teeth and dentistry.
The artwork is filled with playful references to popular culture and familiar childhood experiences, including:
- The classic carnival game "Clown Tooth Knockout."
- The memorable dentist scene featuring Darla from Finding Nemo.
- Exaggerated tooth characters and whimsical visual gags that reward repeat viewing.
These references create moments of recognition and fun, helping children shift their attention away from the treatment itself and towards the world unfolding around them.
Designing for Distraction
The illustration was intentionally designed to be rich with detail, allowing children to:
- Discover new elements while waiting.
- Create stories around the characters.
- Focus on playful visual moments rather than feelings of anxiety.
- Return to the artwork during future visits and notice something new each time.
By introducing humour and storytelling into the environment, the piece helps transform the dental chair from a place of fear into a place of curiosity and imagination.
The Outcome
The finished artwork became more than a mural—it became a tool for comfort and engagement.
Through playful illustration and carefully considered storytelling, the piece contributes to a more positive patient experience, helping children feel at ease while reinforcing Smile Arc's warm and family-focused approach to dental care.
