Food for Worms

Personal Digital Artwork

At its core, Food for Worms is a playful exploration of one of humanity's oldest and most uncomfortable truths: our own mortality.

As humans, we're uniquely burdened with the awareness that our lives are finite—that eventually, every one of us returns to the earth. It's an existential reality that can inspire both dread and fascination, and this artwork was created as a way of confronting that idea through humour and imagination.

The Concept

The piece reimagines the natural order of life and death by turning it completely on its head.

Set within a futuristic farm floating high above the clouds, the artwork depicts a world where worms have become the dominant species. No longer hidden beneath the soil, they are now the farmers, the caretakers and the hunters.

Humans, meanwhile, have become the livestock.

By reversing the relationship between predator and prey, life and decay, the artwork invites viewers to consider their own place within the natural cycle and challenges the assumption that humanity sits at the top of the hierarchy.

The Creative Approach

While the underlying theme is philosophical, the execution embraces absurdity and dark comedy.

The surreal setting of a floating agricultural world creates a sense of whimsy and wonder, while the role reversal between worms and humans introduces an unsettling humour that encourages viewers to linger and ask deeper questions.

The artwork intentionally balances:

  • Existential themes with playful storytelling.
  • Dark subject matter with vibrant, imaginative world-building.
  • Humour with discomfort.
  • Science fiction aesthetics with universal human fears.

Themes Explored

  • Mortality and impermanence

The Outcome

Food for Worms serves as both a comedic thought experiment and a meditation on the human condition.
