Building a Brand from the Origins of Creativity
Brand Identity for a Creative Resource Platform
In late 2019, I was approached to create the brand identity for a new platform dedicated to supporting Australia's creative community through resources, inspiration and education.
The initial brief came with a collection of moodboards and references to existing brands the founders admired. While visually appealing, the direction lacked a deeper narrative or strategic foundation—something that would make the brand distinctive and give it longevity.
I saw this as an opportunity to move beyond aesthetics and build an identity rooted in a more meaningful idea.
The Challenge
The platform occupied a unique space within the Australian creative industry, offering resources specifically designed to support creatives and help them grow their practice.
The challenge was to create a brand that:
- Differentiated itself from existing creative platforms.
- Moved beyond trend-driven design references.
- Built a strong narrative that could support long-term growth.
- Captured the spirit of creativity itself.
Rather than simply emulating other successful brands, the identity needed to answer a more fundamental question:
Where does creativity come from?
Discovering the Core Idea
As I explored the problem, I found myself returning to the origins of creativity.
Creativity isn't something that suddenly appears in adulthood. It's formed through years of experiences:
- The toys we play with.
- The stories and media we consume.
- The games we invent.
- The people and environments that shape us.
These experiences become the building blocks of imagination, influencing how we think, solve problems and express ourselves.
This insight became the strategic foundation of the identity.
The Creative Approach
The visual identity was developed around the idea of rediscovering the sense of curiosity and experimentation that defines childhood creativity.
The brand sought to capture:
- Playfulness and exploration.
- Discovery and imagination.
- The joy of making and creating.
- The imperfect, ever-evolving nature of creative thinking.
Rather than presenting creativity as something polished or exclusive, the identity celebrates it as a process—one that is shaped by countless experiences and influences over time.
The resulting system was designed to feel:

- Deeply connected to the audience it serves.
The Outcome
By reframing the project around the origins of creativity itself, the identity became far more than a collection of visual references.
It provided the platform with a compelling narrative, a stronger sense of purpose and a distinctive position within Australia's creative landscape.
Most importantly, it created a brand that speaks directly to creatives by reminding them of something universal:
