Plugged In
Personal Illustration Series
My exploration of creating strange, dystopian little worlds continues with this hand-drawn illustration—a piece that imagines a future where the boundaries between humanity and artificial intelligence have become increasingly blurred.
At first glance, the artwork presents a chaotic and playful cast of characters. But beneath the surface lies a meditation on identity, connection and what it means to be human in an age increasingly shaped by technology.
The Concept
The piece explores a world where people and machines coexist in complex and often contradictory ways.
Characters of different backgrounds and beliefs interact not only with artificial intelligence, but also with each other, revealing moments of humour, absurdity and quiet unease.
Rather than presenting a clear narrative, the illustration poses a series of questions:
- If artificial intelligence becomes indistinguishable from humanity, what separates us?
- In a hyperconnected world, are we becoming more authentic or more performative?
- How much of our identity is genuine, and how much is constructed?
The Creative Approach
As with much of my personal work, the piece was created through a process of free-form world-building.
I intentionally filled the illustration with hidden symbols and visual metaphors that reinforce the central themes of the work.
Among them are:
- Robots looking into mirrors that reflect humans back at them.
- Cupid firing arrows into the cloud, symbolising love and relationships becoming increasingly digital.
- Characters wearing multiple masks, concealing their true identities beneath layers of performance and self-curation.
- Numerous small interactions and details that reveal themselves only after repeated viewing.
The more time spent with the piece, the more connections begin to emerge.
Building a World Through Detail
I have always been fascinated by illustrations that reward curiosity.
This piece was designed to encourage viewers to slow down and explore, discovering hidden narratives and drawing their own conclusions about the relationships between technology, identity and society.
The dense composition mirrors the complexity of the digital age itself—an overwhelming web of information, personas and interconnected systems that often feels impossible to fully understand.

Result
Plugged In continues my ongoing practice of creating immersive, dystopian worlds that use humour and absurdity to explore serious contemporary themes.
By combining detailed environmental storytelling with symbolic imagery, the piece invites viewers to question how technology is reshaping the way we see ourselves and each other—and to discover something new each time they return to the work.
