Simplifying Financial Products Through Motion

Animation Series for Qantas Business Money

In 2022, following the launch of the Qantas Business Money platform, I was engaged to create a series of animations that would help explain the product's functionality and communicate its key benefits to prospective customers.

What began as a brief for two animations quickly expanded into a suite of five, as the complexity and depth of the platform required a more detailed and modular approach to storytelling.

The Challenge

Financial products often present a communication challenge. While features and benefits can be powerful, explaining them in a way that is clear, engaging and easy to understand requires thoughtful design and careful simplification.

The objective was to create a series of animations that would:

  • Explain the platform's key features and functionality.
  • Educate users on the benefits of the product.
  • Simplify complex information into digestible content.
  • Provide assets that could support customer acquisition and onboarding across multiple digital platforms.

The animations needed to strike a balance between detail and accessibility, catering to audiences seeking a deeper understanding of the product.

The Creative Approach

I approached the project by first developing simple hand-drawn storyboards to map out the narrative and information hierarchy before moving into production.

From there, I created an extensive suite of illustrated assets that functioned as a modular design system within After Effects.

This approach delivered several advantages:

  • Consistency across all animations.
  • Faster production of additional content as the project scope expanded.
  • Greater flexibility when adapting scenes and messaging.
  • More time to focus on animation timing, pacing and storytelling during production.

By building the visual toolkit first, the production process became highly efficient and scalable.

The Animation System

The modular asset library included:

  • Custom illustrations and iconography.
  • Reusable interface components.
  • Character and environmental assets.
  • Motion behaviours and transition systems.
  • Flexible compositions that could be adapted across multiple videos.

This system-based approach allowed the animations to maintain a cohesive visual language while accommodating increasingly granular product information.

The Outcome

The final animations proved highly effective as educational tools, helping customers better understand the capabilities of the Qantas Business Money platform.

The longer-form videos were particularly valuable across channels such as the Qantas Business Rewards platform and Airwallex, where audiences were actively seeking detailed product information before making decisions.

The project demonstrates the power of motion design to simplify complex financial products and transform technical information into engaging and accessible customer experiences.
