Inspired by the Vertical City

Personal Artwork Inspired by Japan

Few places have influenced my creative practice quite like Japan.

During my travels throughout the country, I found myself constantly inspired by the richness of Japanese visual culture. From the hand-painted storefronts and meticulously designed brands to the endless rows of bookstores and the dense layering of signs, colours and characters, every street seemed to tell its own story.

The experience culminated in this large-scale personal artwork—a love letter to the energy, chaos and visual language of urban Japan.

The Concept

The piece is inspired by the tightly packed grid of buildings that define the skyline of Osaka.

Unlike many Western cities, where architecture often feels separated and ordered, Osaka's streets feel layered and interconnected. Buildings stack upon one another, signage competes for attention and every window seems to contain another story waiting to be discovered.

I wanted to capture that feeling of density and endless visual exploration.

The artwork became an imagined cityscape, built from fragments of inspiration gathered throughout my travels.

The Creative Approach

Rather than directly recreating specific locations, I incorporated memories and observations from my time in Japan into a single, cohesive composition.

The piece draws inspiration from:

  • Japanese storefronts and street signage.
  • Graphic design and branding found throughout the city.
  • Independent bookstores and printed media.
  • The visual rhythm created by densely packed urban architecture.
  • The sense of discovery that comes from wandering unfamiliar streets.

The illustration is intentionally rich with detail, encouraging viewers to move through the artwork in the same way one might explore the streets of Osaka—finding new stories, references and visual moments with every glance.

Building an Imagined City

At its heart, the piece is less about architecture and more about atmosphere.

It seeks to capture:

  • The excitement of creative discovery.
  • The overwhelming density of urban life.
  • The beauty found in visual clutter.
  • The intersection of design, culture and everyday experiences.

By layering countless small details together, the artwork attempts to recreate the feeling of standing in the middle of Osaka and being completely immersed by the city around you.

Result

This piece became both a creative exercise and a personal record of my experiences in Japan.

It serves as a reminder of how profoundly travel can shape creative thinking and how the places we visit often leave lasting impressions that find their way back into our work in unexpected ways.
