The Psychological Maze

Some artworks begin with a concept, while others begin with a person.

This piece was created for a close friend and explores the idea of navigating an internal, psychological maze—one filled with obstacles, anxieties and tyrannies waiting around every corner.

Through surreal imagery and symbolic storytelling, the illustration attempts to visualise the feeling of moving through complex emotional and mental landscapes, where every decision, memory and fear can become another winding corridor.

The Concept

At its core, the piece is about the invisible labyrinths we all carry within us.

The maze represents:

• Internal conflict and self-doubt.
• The burdens and expectations that shape our decisions.
• The feeling of being trapped by our own thoughts.
• The constant search for meaning, direction and escape.

Rather than depicting these ideas literally, the artwork uses a rich visual world filled with characters and symbols that hint at larger narratives.

The Creative Approach

As with much of my personal work, I approached the piece through layered world-building and hidden references.

I wanted the illustration to feel like a scene from a larger story—one that encourages viewers to explore and form their own interpretations.

Throughout the composition are subtle nods to neo-noir crime cinema, drawing inspiration from the genre's themes of mystery, moral ambiguity and characters lost within systems larger than themselves.

These references introduce a cinematic quality to the piece, blending:

• Pop culture influences.
• Symbolic storytelling.
• Moments of humour and discovery.

The more time spent with the artwork, the more hidden details begin to emerge.

Building Meaning Through Symbolism

I have always been fascinated by illustrations that reward repeated viewing.

Every corner of this piece was designed to suggest another story, another interpretation or another piece of the puzzle.

The labyrinth itself becomes a metaphor for the human experience—messy, complicated and filled with unexpected encounters.
