Transforming Campus Through Public Art
Large-Scale Mural for Curtin University
Some projects are memorable because of the artwork itself. Others are memorable because of the journey required to bring them to life.
This mural for Curtin University sits firmly in both categories.
Commissioned by the Curtin Alumni and Explore Curtin teams, the project became one of the most logistically challenging outdoor artworks I've undertaken to date. The complexity of the installation, combined with the scale of the piece and the realities of working outdoors, made it a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience.
The Challenge
Creating large-scale public artwork comes with a unique set of challenges that extend far beyond the creative process.
The project required:
- Careful planning and coordination with multiple stakeholders.
- Working within the constraints of a busy university environment.
- Managing changing weather conditions and outdoor installation requirements.
- Delivering a high-quality artwork while navigating complex logistical considerations.
Projects like these are as much about problem-solving and adaptability as they are about painting.
The Creative Approach
The mural was designed to create a vibrant and engaging experience for students, alumni and visitors moving through the campus.
As with many of my public artworks, the goal was to create something that:
- Adds personality and character to the environment.
- Encourages moments of discovery and interaction.
- Contributes positively to the identity of the space.
- Creates a memorable landmark within the campus.
Public art has a unique ability to transform everyday places, and this project was an opportunity to create something that could become part of the experience of being at Curtin.
The Process
Bringing the mural to life required equal parts creativity and resilience.
Working outdoors always introduces an element of unpredictability, and this project was no exception. From changing conditions to the practical challenges that come with large-scale installations, every day presented new obstacles to solve.
Thankfully, the process was made infinitely more enjoyable by the incredible support of the Curtin team.
A special thanks goes to the Curtin Alumni and Explore Curtin teams for their collaboration, enthusiasm and hospitality—and for keeping me fuelled with Zooper Doopers when the weather turned particularly unforgiving.
Special thanks also to Bridget Head for bringing me onboard and trusting me with the project.
The Outcome
The completed mural stands as one of the most challenging and satisfying public artworks I've produced.
Beyond the final piece itself, the project reinforced something I value deeply in public art: the ability to create lasting experiences through collaboration, adaptability and creative problem-solving.
The mural now forms part of the visual fabric of the Curtin campus, contributing colour, personality and a sense of place for the community that passes through it every day.
