Located in the heart of the Kalgoorlie goldfields, Norton Gold Fields represents a unique partnership between Australia and China, bringing together people, cultures and expertise within one of Western Australia's most significant mining regions.
I was commissioned by the Norton Gold Fields marketing team to create a large-scale mural that would celebrate this collaboration and provide an engaging, welcoming environment for staff within the mine's accommodation facilities.
The Challenge
The brief was to create an artwork that reflected the shared relationship between the Chinese and Australian teams while bringing warmth and personality to a communal space used by employees every day.
The mural needed to:
- Celebrate cultural connection and collaboration.
- Capture the spirit of the Kalgoorlie mining region.
- Create a vibrant and inviting atmosphere within the staff living quarters.
- Be delivered within an extremely tight timeframe.
The Creative Approach
Working closely with the Norton Gold Fields marketing team, I developed an original mural concept that combined playful illustration with themes of partnership, community and place.
The artwork draws inspiration from:
- The iconic landscapes of the Kalgoorlie goldfields.
- The mining industry that has shaped the region's identity.
- The coming together of Chinese and Australian cultures through shared goals and collaboration.
- A sense of optimism, connection and camaraderie among the workforce.
The result is a colourful and engaging piece that transforms a functional communal area into a space that celebrates the people who live and work there.
Bringing the Mural to Life
To complete the project, I travelled to Kalgoorlie and painted the entire mural on-site in just two days.
The fast turnaround required careful planning, close collaboration and efficient execution, ensuring the artwork was delivered on schedule without compromising on quality or detail.
